PlayOnLinux – Janosch Braukmann

The programme PlayOnLinux accomplished, what I failed to do on my Ubuntu. Get Age of Empires III running with Wine. PlayOnLinux is using Scripts, describing how to install a game (or something else).

The installation of Age of Empires III was as following: An appropriate Wine version was dowloaded, installed and a fitting wineprefix created. Then all 3 CDs were copied to my computer and installed afterwards. Then (after asking) the latest patch was downloaded and installed automatically.

On a gaming PC this could be one of the most important programmes (next to Wine). But who want a clean system and to know exactly what is going on on his computer I would not reccomend it. Not only that the programme in the ppa is not signed, but it downloads different versions of Wine automatically. Where exactly they are installed is something I don’t know. A look at the source code could fix this, of course.

Das Programm PlayOnLinux hat geschafft, was ich mit meinem Ubuntu mehrfach erfolglos versucht hatte. Age of Empires III mit Wine zum laufen zu bringen. PlayOnLinux greift dabei auf Skripte zurück, die beschreiben, wie ein Spiel (oder andere Programme) installiert werden.

Die Installation von Age of Empires III verlief wie folgt: Zuerst hat Wine in einer dazu passenden Version heruntergeladen und ein entsprechendes Winepräfix erstellt. Danach wurden alle 3 CDs auf den Computer kopiert, und anschließend die Installation durchlaufen. Danach wurde mir (nach einer Bestätigung) automatisch der aktuellste Patch heruntergeladen und installiert. Auf einem Spielecomputer kann dies sicher eines der wertvollsten Programme (neben Wine) sein. Wer allerdings Wert auf ein sauberes System legt, und genau wissen möchte, was auf seinem Computer passiert, dem sei davon abgeraten. Nicht nur, dass das Programm nicht in den offiziellen Quellen ist, und das angebotene PPA nicht signiert ist, es lädt auch automatisch verschieden Versionen von Wine herunter. Wo genau diese hin installiert wurden, weiß ich nicht. Ein Blick in den Quellcode kann hier aber Abhilfe verschaffen, denn PlayOnLinux ist Freie Software. Pakete für viele der gängigen Linux Distributionen gibt es hier.
